Roomeys Group

Our History

From a small idea to a growing food brand.

A journey that started with one idea, survived failure, and grew into something much bigger.

The name

The meaning behind Roomeys

The name “Roomeys” comes from an Afrikaans word associated with ice cream. It points straight back to where the story began: a young graduate in 2018 who wanted to build something of his own, and a father who was already selling ice cream cones.

That connection to ice cream, and to a family already working in food, is the reason the name stuck. Everything that came afterwards grew out of it.

The first product carried this name before the company did. The idea came first; the business took years to catch up.

The journey, year by year

Five moments that shaped the company. None of them looked like a milestone at the time.

2018

The first idea

Fresh out of college and inspired by his father’s ice cream cone business, the founder launched Roomeys Ice Cream and started selling it in schools. It didn’t work, and the business eventually failed.

The cheese beginning

The founder’s sister wanted to open a pizza business, and the price of cheese was in the way. Rather than accept it, she decided to try making cheese herself and called her brother. The experiments that followed became the real start of Roomeys Group.

Growing & learning

The cheese business took shape slowly: improving the process, developing the products, and building relationships with customers one order at a time. Progress came from persistence and repetition, not a single breakthrough.

A new chapter

Roomeys began expanding well beyond cheese, adding mayonnaise, yoghurt, icing sugar, fresh milk and more cheese varieties. The goal shifted from one product to a broader food brand for households, restaurants, retailers and businesses.

Looking ahead

The work now is to keep developing quality food products, widen the range, reach more customers across Tanzania, and build a food brand that lasts.

2018 · The first attempt

An ice cream, a father’s trade, and a business that failed

The founder had just graduated and wanted to build something of his own. His father was already selling ice cream cones, and that was enough of a starting point. Taking the idea further, he introduced Roomeys Ice Cream and began selling it in schools.

It did not succeed. The business struggled and eventually failed. There was no dramatic pivot and no rescue — just a first attempt that didn’t hold together.

The failure wasn’t the end of the story. It was the first thing the company was built on.

The lesson

Learning the trade behind a counter

Instead of rushing into another venture, the founder stepped away from running his own business and joined his brother, working in a shop.

It was practical, unglamorous experience: serving customers, managing products, handling the day-to-day of commerce. He learned how a business actually runs when you are the one behind the counter.

That grounding mattered. When the next opportunity came, it was met by someone who understood what selling and running a business really involved.

2019 · The turning point

A pizza plan, expensive cheese, and a decision to make it themselves

In 2019, the founder’s sister wanted to open a pizza business. One of the biggest obstacles was the cost of cheese. It was expensive enough to put the whole plan at risk.

Rather than treat that as a fixed cost she had to live with, she decided to explore making cheese herself. She contacted her brother, and together they started experimenting with cheese production.

What started as a solution to a simple business problem gradually became something much bigger.

The birth of Roomeys Group

From kitchen experiments to a real business

Later in 2019, the experiments turned into a plan. The founder and his sister officially began building the cheese business. This was the point where a personal fix became a company.

It carried the name from the first idea, Roomeys, but this time with a product people wanted and a family willing to keep working at it. This marked the beginning of what would eventually become Roomeys Group.

2019–2025 · The journey of growth

Built through persistence, not instant success

The company grew from those early experiments the slow way. Production improved. Products were developed and refined. Relationships with customers were built and kept. Each challenge taught something that went back into the work.

Trying again after failure

The first business failed. The willingness to start over is what carried the company forward.

Experimentation

Cheese making started as trial and error and stayed that way as the process was refined.

Family collaboration

A brother, a sister and a father’s trade. The company was built by people working together.

Production & product development

Improving how the cheese was made, and steadily developing the products around it.

Customer relationships

Growth came one customer at a time, by earning repeat orders and trust.

Persistence

No single breakthrough. Just showing up, fixing what wasn’t working, and continuing.

2026 · A new chapter

Growing beyond cheese

By 2026, Roomeys began entering a new stage of growth. The company started expanding quickly beyond cheese and introduced a wider range of food products.

This expansion is about building a broader food brand: one that can serve households, restaurants, retailers and businesses with quality, locally produced products.

More to come
Roomeys was not built from one perfect idea. It was built from trying, failing, learning, and trying again.
